Term 2 Update

Below is the Term 2 Update with information about what our students will be learning in each year level and specialist area this term.

Welcome to Term 2! We are extremely proud of the resilience the students have displayed in the mornings and thank you for supporting your child’s independence by engaging in our Kiss and Go strategy. If you are late to class, after receiving a late pass from the office, please bring your child to the classroom and enact the Kiss and Go strategy at the door.

Your child is capable of organising their items such as purple pockets and readers etc.

Phonics – We are continuing to learn the most common sounds of the alphabet. We will build upon the students phonemic awareness skills with the support of our programs, Orton Gillingham (OG), Heggerty and the use of phonics cards. Our focus is on correct letter formation and writing simple 3 letter words.

Maths – During this term we will continue to build upon the students knowledge of numbers with an focus on correct number formation. We will learn about 3D shapes and begin to learn about simple graphs. Visuals, concrete materials and hands-on activities will be used to support your child’s learning.

Humanities – This term our focus is on Community Helpers. We will delve into the professions of those people that support us in our communities such as doctors, nurses, police officers, firefighters, hairdressers, train drivers and construction workers. We will conclude this topic in Week 6 with a dress up day.

Wellbeing – One focus is on ‘Friendship’ learning about what makes a good friend and how to be a good friend. We will also focus on some problem solving strategies that the students can use. You could ask your child questions such as – ‘How were you being a good friend today?” or “Who was a good friend to you today?” Our School Wide Positive Behaviour focus is on lining up quickly and safely when the music begins.

OG – We are continuing to develop our Phonemic Awareness strategies by focusing on digraphs, r-controlled digraphs and split digraphs including eg. e- e, a-e, oi, ir, er and ay). This will assist students to decode and spell words when reading and writing.

Literacy – This term, we will continue exploring sentences – how they are constructed, the appropriate punctuation needed and the types of words used. We will look at how we can create sentences using question marks, exclamation marks and full stops correctly. We will learn the differences between fiction and non-fiction texts while creating our own informative piece across the term.

Maths – During term 2, students will continue to be involved in a range of hands-on activities using concrete materials such as number charts, counters, math games, blocks, and base-ten materials to reinforce their understanding  of double-digit numbers, 3D shapes and addition & subtraction algorithms.

Humanities – In Term 2 we are going to learn all about the ancient society Mesopotamia (Mess-uh-pot-a-mia) and find out what life was like thousands of years ago. We will learn about the jobs people had, what the buildings looked like, how their community worked

together, and the laws people followed, creating the first every civilisation. Wellbeing – This term we have introduced Morning Circle where we greet our students and prepare them for the day in a fun and engaging way. This strategy aims to assist all class members to start the morning off with a positive mindset, ready to learn. The program fits in perfectly with our focus on emotional regulation and strategies on how to get back into the right zone for learning.


Literacy – Students will continue to build on their phonics knowledge through the Orton & Gillingham program. This term students will continue to look at and consolidate their knowledge of a range of phonograms, prefixes, root words and suffixes. We will also be focusing on informative writing and poetry throughout the term.

Maths – In term 2, students will continue to develop their number fluency and skill application through daily reviews. Students will be introduced to multiplication and division through fact families and fluency tasks. They will be exploring units of measurement and finding the perimeter and area of regular and irregular polygons. Students will also be looking at different ways to represent data.

Humanities: This term Year 3’s are exploring Ancient Rome. Students will learn about the founding and the rise and fall of the Roman Empire. Students will learn about cultural impacts and use their map skills to explore the geography of the region.


Literacy – This term our students will be engaging with the novel, War Horse. We will be answering questions relating to the text, analysing literary techniques used by the Author and creating texts based upon the content of the novel. We will also be continuing to learn the meanings behind different parts of words, whether they be prefixes, base words or suffixes.

Maths – We will continue to introduce new content to our students, as well as continuously review already taught concepts. This term we will have a particular focus on fractions, especially around calculations with different denominators. We will also run a once-weekly problem-solving lesson, with some students participating in Maths Olympiad.

Humanities – We have already started our Read2Learn unit around Medieval Islamic Empires, which is challenging students to consider other people’s beliefs and values.




Term 1 Canteen Price List Term 2 Update


Phonics – We are continuing to develop our Phonemic Awareness strategies by focusing on more complex digraphs such as eigh, ture, tion, sion, and stle. This will assist the students in decoding and spelling words.

Writing – This term we will learn to plan and write persuasive pieces aimed at an appropriate target audience. We will recognise and edit run-on sentences by adding correct punctuation conjunctions.

Maths – During Term 2 we continue to build upon our addition and subtraction skills including renaming. We will learn to count Australian coins and use meters to count the length of objects. We will also learn how to collect, analyse and represent data in a graph. We will consistently review topics daily and practice fluency to assist with the application in equations.

Humanities – To begin the term we will be learning about the culture of Japan.

Following that students will be engaging in learning related to Ancient Greece.


Literacy – Students will continue to learn a variety of letter blends (eg. ‘oa’ blend) and the morphology of words, which is the study of words and their parts. They will be introduced to a variety of prefixes and suffixes and the meaning behind these. They will use their knowledge from our phonics program to develop an understanding of unknown words while reading. Students will focus on the writing style of Autobiographies this term.

Maths – The major focus this term will be on multiplication and division and the close relationship between the two operations.

Humanities – We begin the term learning about “World Mountains” with a focus on major mountain ranges by continent and high mountains of the world.

Literacy: In Term 2 our Year 6s will continue to develop their voYcabEulAaryRthro6ugh novel studies, morphology and writing. We will read the novel Rivet Boy, studying themes and language in the text and related pieces of writing, as well as responding to the text in similar written forms. Informative report writing and creative writing will be our main styles.

Maths: Interleaving all six strands of maths across the term, the students will learn to apply mathematical modelling to problem solving scenarios, use rational numbers, percentages and fractions, identify relationships with angles, plot points on the cartesian plane, plan and conduct statistical investigations, and assign probabilities and predict frequencies. Participation in several maths extension and problem- solving challenges including Olympiad and Bebras will extend and enhance the students mathematical thinking skills.

Humanities: We begin the term with a Read 2 Learn Unit “The Enlightenment”, where students will learn about several important historical figures from the 1600-1700s, who ushered in the Modern Age of scientific thinking, government and modern philosophy. We will then move to our study of Economics and learn about supply and demand and simple business models.

This term in Physical Education promises a full schedule of activities. Here’s a breakdown of the sports and skills development planned by year level:

We’re also excited to offer several special events and programs this term: Interschool Sports: Available for Year 5 and Year 6 students.

SEDA Netball Clinic: A four-week clinic run by SEDA.
Swimming Program: For students from Foundation to Year 2.
Stay active and get ready for an exciting term in Physical Education!


Students from Year 1 – 6 will continue to work with the same robots as last term.  Major focuses this term are: Foundation – Meet the Bluebots and learn to code them.

Year 1 – Finding and fixing bugs (errors) in code

Year 2 – How Ozobots decide which way to travel and learn directional colour codes.

Year   3   –   The importance of research,    evaluating, and reflecting to make the best video game for the audience.

Year 4 – Perfecting their estimating of angles to code to a desired location and learn to animate the LED screen.

Year 5 – Ramps – code accurately to get over ramps, then construction their own ramps that can be driven over.

Year 6 – 3D printers – design items that will print. Lego- Experiment with code blocks to move a vehicle.


From Foundation to Year Four, we will be exploring the link between science and art by creating space related artwork. This will include sponge painted planets, space monsters, robots, and rocket sculptures. Some of this work will be on display at the STEM night.

Year 3 and 4 will be learning to sew & extending sewing skills.
Foundation and year 6 will create self-portraits.
Year 5 & 6 will work on a graffiti art project, Year 5 will also explore steampunk art.


This term in Science, students from Foundation to Year 6 will develop and deepen their understanding of earth and space science. Students will be learning about:

Foundation – The moon

Year 1 and 2 – Constellations Year 3 and 4 – Day and Night Year 4 and 6 – The Solar System


This term the French program will aim to develop students’ oral skills using basic/complex vocabulary involving everyday common phrases.

Foundation – greetings, songs and simple routines and numbers from 0 to 10.

Year 1 – simple texts such as lists and descriptions.
Year 2 – pronouns, prepositions and simple present tense forms of regular verbs.
Year 3 – sounds, rhythms and pitch of spoken French. Year 4 – intonation, gestures and facial expressions.
Year 5/6 – complete sentences, in familiar contexts, using appropriate pronunciation, intonation and non-verbal communication strategies.


In Performing Arts students will be learning dance through their preparation for our whole school production of Pirates of the Curry Bean! Each grade will learn a dance routine that also incorporates singing, while portraying pirate characters.
